Course Title: Music Theory 1-2 Course No.: 0308 Length of Course: 1 year Grade Level: 9-12 Prerequisite: None Fulfills UC/CSU Requirements: Yes Semester Periods of Credit: 5 Meets District Graduation Requirement: Arts This class is intended for students with little or no background in written music. Emphasis will be on the basics of music composition and music reading. The students will have the opportunity to explore musical elements and different music styles while writing basic original music. Previous musical knowledge is recommended. Course Title: A.P. Music Theory Course No.: 0296 Length of Course: 1 year Grade Level: 9-12 Prerequisite: Passing Music Theory Placement Exam Fulfills UC/CSU Requirements: Yes Semester Periods of Credit: 5 Meets District Graduation Requirement: Arts This is a college level, first year music theory course. It incorporates the study of melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, form, musical analysis, elementary composition, and to some extent, history and style. Musicianship skills such as dictation and other listening skills, sight-singing, and keyboard harmony are also developed within the scope of the curriculum. The student’s ability to read and write musical notation is fundamental to this course. It is also assumed that the student has acquired at least basic performance skills in voice or on an instrument. |
